Pumpkins are a squash with a slightly sweet flesh. They are popular to make jack o’ lanterns during Halloween.
Choose a pumpkin that is heavy for its size. It should not have a lot of blemishes on the skin. You will want one that isn’t too large. Smaller pumpkins are more suitable for eating. Store in a cool dry place if you want to eat it later.
Almost all of the pumpkin is edible. The flesh can be cut and turned into a mash or soup. For a sweeter variation you can chunk the pumpkin and simmer with a bit of brown sugar. The seeds can be roasted and eaten. The flesh can also be used for pumpkin pie.
