Gently squeeze the middle of the fruit — if there is a hollow section between the fruit and the skin it needs to be eaten that day, and may already be rotten. If the fruit squishes quite easily, it needs to be eaten in the next day or two. An avocado that is completely hard can take another 4-6 days to ripen; so make your purchase based on the day you’d like your guacamole.
Remove the skin and pit and then take in the wonder that is an avocado. When ripe it needs very little to enhance its flavor except perhaps a bit of salt. Of course, mashing it with cumin, garlic, onions, and tomato is a common route for the game-watching, chip-dipping crowd.
