Commonly known as prickly pear, this cactus-made fruit is chock full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and vitamins and minerals. Its juice provides an intensely sweet flavor.
Go for smaller fruits over larger ones. The skin of ripe cactus will be shiny, smooth, and deeply colored. Squeeze it a little, and a ripe prickly pear should yield a bit to a little pressure.
First, make sure that any spines are gone before eating! Prickly pear is popular in juices, smoothies, or in a mixed drink. It also goes great mixed in with your lemonade!
